Replace “sliding dial” thermostat with programmable thermostat for an old furnace?

I just bought a house in November 2007 (bad timing, I know). It was originally built in the 1960s. It has what appears to be a pretty old, but still functional, furnace. I control the temperature using one of those sliding dials with temperatures that range from “off” to about 90, where I slide the little level to the temperature that I want to the house to be. To turn the furnace off, I have to slide the dial to the “off” position.

It’s pretty easy to install a T-stat. A basic understanding of what it is you have for HVAC is needed. You need to know if you have an electric heater, a heat pump, a gas furnace, or whatever you may have. Then you just need to follow the instructions that come with it. Is a simple system you have 4 wires you use and they are installed by color. I am not well versed on all types of HVAC but if you take the cover off your old T-stat and can see how it’s hooked that will help. If there are only wires attached to it then you should have no trouble. Worse case scenario is you get half way through and something doesnt work and you have to call in a tech to finish it.
